Anne Coffman-Davee's g-g-grandmother, Malissa Witters Coffman as a young woman, who spent most of her life in Lawrence County (Christy & Sumner Townships). Malissa was born 03 Mar 1857. She died at the age of 29 on 05 Jan 1887. She is buried in Sumner Cemetery, Old Section next to her second husband. Her parents were Benjamin Witters and Malinda Day Witters. Malissa married William Coffman in Lawrence Co., IL on 18 March 1874. According to the 1880 census, they had three children at that time; Henry Herman, her g.grandfather, who was 5 in 1880; James M. who was 3, and Lula M. who was 1 (and who, at some point, married a man named Bowen). Sometime between 5 July 1880 and September 1882, William must have died bc Malissa remarried on 20 Sept 1882 to a man listed as William H. Travis.

Anne Coffman-Davee thinks this is a picture of Malinda Day Witters. Malinda was still alive during this time period and living with her daughter Rose Witters Wagner in Christy Township. Gentlemen in the picture are Henry Herman Coffman (her g.grandfather) and (his son, her grandfather) James Herman Coffman, and the young girl might be Nina, Rose Wagner's daughter. Henry Herman died when he was 41. Henry Herman's grandmother, widow of Leander Coffman, was Catherine Baker Coffman.
